Two types of lung cancer have been identified. There is non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer.

Small cell lung cancer include three types which include many different types of cells. The cancer cells of each type can grow and spread in different ways. The different types of small cell lung cancer are based on the kinds of cells found in the cancer and how the cells look when viewed with a microscope.

The three types are: Small cell carcinoma (oat cell cancer), Combined small cell carcinoma and mixed small cell/large cell carcinoma.

Something that increases your chances of getting a cancer is called a risk factor. For lung cancer, cigarette smoking is the most common cause of lung cancer.
